Easter in Majorca
The Easter week begin traditionally with Palm Sunday, it always fall on the first Sunday before Easter. It marks the end of Lent, a period of fasting and penitence in preparation for Easter. The Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus Christ's entry in Jerusalem. Locals carry the olive and palm branches which are kept in homes to ward off evil. An afternoon mass takes place at Majorca's Cathedral in Palma. The mass will be attended by many priests from all over Majorca as well as the bishop.
From Monday to Friday a series of processions continue e.g. "Brotherhood of the Blood of Christ" on Maundy Thursday and the 'Holy Burial' on Good Friday.
The procession on Maundy Thursday in Palma de Majorca is one of the most spectacular due to the vast amount of people who take part.
On Easter Sunday when the Procession of the 'Meeting' is celebrated the week of celebrations comes to a closing.
