Chopin in Valldemosa

I can imagine that people who have never visited the holiday island of Majorca before, but only heard the many stories about its excellent beaches and vibrant tourist resorts, might think that beach and nightlife is all there is on offer on this popular summer destination. Well for those who’d like to visit the island, but are more interested in a quiet and relaxed stay combined with some cultural and historical ingredients, the island also has many charming and peaceful historic towns on offer. One of the most famous is probably Valldemosa. The Polish pianist and composer Frederic Chopin spent the winter of 1838 in this village together with his lover, the French feminist author George Sand who wrote a book about their Majorcan adventure afterwards. Apparently the couple didn’t enjoy their time on the island as much as most visitors do nowadays. The weather was bad and had worsened the composer’s health, the piano they expected never arrived, and the locals of the village weren’t the friendliest either.

Today the cell in the Royal Carthusian Monastery where they were staying is open to visitors. Besides that the monastery accommodates several museums, like an old pharmacy, the monk’s library, and a modern art museum with works of several renowned artists. In the charming medieval village or in its surroundings you can find nice Majorca accommodation. You can choose for a rural holiday and stay in an authentic Majorcan countryside house, or go for more luxury and choose a comfortable stay in the cosy four-star hotel in Valldemosa. Other popular rural destinations on Majorca are Campanet and Orient in the Sierra de Tramuntana, Montuiri and Binissalem.

Ibiza's San José Coastline

In the southeast of Ibiza we find the municipality of San José. The town Sant Josep de sa Talaia was named after the mountain located nearby. This region accommodates the island’s most beaches and coves and covers a coastline of nearly 50 miles. Cala Comte, Cala Bassa and Cala Vedella are the three most beautiful coves, they even were rewarded with blue flags. Escape from the larger tourist resorts to these hidden coves of clear and turquoise blue waters. Some of the larger beaches are surrounded by pine forests. Pine forrests are abundant on Ibiza and its smaller neighbour Formentera. This is why they are popularly nicknamed „Las Pitiusas“.

Besides beautiful beaches and impressive natural parks San José also has a great historical heritage. You can visit the Punic-Roman rural settlement of Ses Païses near Cala d’Hort and another historical attraction is the Phoenician village in Sa Caleta. There are also two famous watchtowers, the Torre de ses Portes and the Torre de Comte, both built during the 17th and 18th centuries by locals to prevent invasions from the sea. Furthermore there are some marvelous churches in this region. Something you really shouldn’t miss out on while vacationing in this region is the Cova Santa, a 25 meters deep natural cave with many stalctites and stalagmites.

In the town of Sant Josep you can also enjoy all sorts of sports and the town hall organizes many cultural and traditional activities and events throughout the year. If you want to come and enjoy the southeast coast of Ibiza you can either choose to stay in the cultural center and take an Ibiza holiday accommodation in San José or the neighbouring town of San Augustin or choose to spend most time along the coast visiting the many beaches and staying in an Ibiza hotel or Ibiza apartment in for example Cala Tarida or in Cala Vadella.

Majorca, a golfers’ paradise

The Island of Majorca is a true paradise for golf lovers. In total the Island counts 18 great golf courses of which the biggest, with 36 holes, is located in Lluchmajor, in the southeast. This one is fairly flat and laid out amongst trees. The four lakes as well as the strategic bunkers provide some appealing challenges. Moreover there’s an excellent practice area available. There are some good rural Majorca hotels to stay in near the Son Antem Golf course, like the cosy three star Hotel Sa Bassa Plana, 15 km from the golf course or the rural house of Son Sampoli, 6km from the golf course.

Around Palma, the capital of Majorca you can find Son Vida Golf and Son Muntaner Golf, both 18 holes courses of which the latter one is only available for guests staying in the Palma de Mallorca hotels Castillo Son Vida and Arabella Sheraton.

The highest concentration of Golf courses is to be found in Calvià in the Southeast of Majorca. Besides many golf courses, this area also has the widest variation of different beaches for different types of holiday makers and above all, staying in this are means being not more than half an hour drive away from the city of Palma. Every year in March the Open International, uniting the world’s best players, takes place here at the golf course of Santa Ponça.

Golf courses in the north of Majorca are the 9 holes course Golf Pollença in Pollença, Club the Golf Alcanada with its 18 holes in Puerto de Alcudia and Capdepera Golf and Canyamel Golf in and near Artà, both with 18 holes.

The good coast and the better

On the calm east coast of Majorca in the district of Son Servera you can find some of the island’s most beautiful beaches and holiday resorts. Earlier inhabitants of this part certainly were aware of the beauty of their coast and the people in one of the villages named their town Cala Bona or the „good bay“ which resulted in one of the neighbouring villages naming itself Cala Millor or the „the better bay“.

Nowadays these towns are two popular holiday resorts. Cala Bona still maintained the atmosphere of a traditional fishing village with its narrow streets and the small working harbour. Hotels in Cala Bona are mainly occupied by visitors from the UK. The traditional charm of the village and the absence of any exhilirating nightlife mostly attracts families looking for relaxation and some occasional daytrips to the inlands, the neighboring harbor towns and the natural beauty nearby.

Cala Millor is more modern. It’s the largest tourist development along the east coast and is known for its 6km long stretch of gently sloping beaches with clear water, probably one of the best beaches on the island. The sea here is ideal for windsurfing and the resort boasts a windsurfing school. Even though accommodation in Cala Millor is also mostly suited for families, the town does have a wide selection of bars and discos for younger generations looking for some nightly entertainment.

When travelling to the inlands of the island from Cala Bona and Cala Millor you will also find many interesting towns that still breathe the traditional island atmosphere. Like Manacor, known for its Pearl industry and the lovely town of Son Servera. People looking for a more rural vacation can find very good Majorca accommodation in these towns or their surroundings and choose to visit the coast by car.
