Majorca city trip at the beach

Majorca is a renown holiday destination for all types of travellers looking for either a family beach holiday, a beach and party trip, a quiet stay in the countryside, a base for cultural and historical daytrips, a Majorca citytrip or even a combination of all that. The Island of Majorca has many activities to offer, but many people might not be aware of where to find what kind of destination. The island measures about 80 km from one end to the other and it has 550 km of coastline. Along these coasts there are different kinds of beach resorts. If for example you’re interested in a beach holiday but you would also like to do some cultural daytrips then you might want to stay in the Balearic capital or in one of the nearby towns. In the capital Palma de Majorca you can find all sorts of Majorca accommodation, from family hostals, luxury hotels, cheap apartments and much more. Within the city you can visit many different museums, historical buildings, art galleries and other cultural activities. And for a day at the beach you can visit one of the resorts just outside the town.

If you’re not that much of a culture lover, but you would like to visit Palma anyway, you can of course do it the other way around and find a hotel in one of these resorts. Each town along the coast is different and attracts its own kind of visitors. Magaluf for example is very popular for groups of young English, Dutch and German groups looking for nightly entertainment in the many bars, pubs and nightclubs. The neighboring Palma Nova is much more of a family destination with a slightly smaller offer of hotels and thus less crowded. These two larger resorts are located a few kilometers to the east of Palma. In between there are the smaller towns of Cala Mayor just ouside Palma, the tiny Illetas, Bendinat and Portals Nous. These resorts are good destinations to find a suitable family hotel. On the west of Palma there are Ca’n Pastilla and Playa de Palma. The sand on the beach of Ca’n Pastilla is very clean and it’s know for the high quality of the sea water.

Aquasol Apartments Palmanova

Just a mere 10 km from the Majorcan capital Palma de Majorca we find the two renown tourist resorts of Palma Nova and Magaluf. Over the years these two towns have grown into one large resort offering anything you might be looking for during a holiday on Majorca. In Summertime these two towns are the perfect destination for an active beach holiday. As Palma Nova is a bit less crowded with party seeking groups of tourists due to the smaller offer of nightclubs, cafés and English pubs, it is better suited for families than Magaluf. For families looking for an accommodation on Majorca it is recommended to choose a Majorca apartment instead of a hotel. Holiday apartments offer far more liberty and that touch of homelyness that families might be looking for on their holidays. It’s a comfortable idea that after a day at the beach you can return to your apartment and relax in your own living room.

A great accommodation in Palma Nova is hotel Aquasol. This three star aparthotel offers a large number of apartments for upto four people. The Natural Beauty of Majorca

There are many good reasons to visit Majorca and the other Balearic Islands, but the unique and enchanting natural beauty on the island of Mallorca definitely is one of the most important reasons. The Island doesn’t only offer holiday opportunities in popular party and beach resorts. Many Majorca hotels are located at quiet locations outside the tourist centers. You can easily find a good accommodation on Majorca near places where the island’s unique flora and fauna have been preserved. Enjoy the sight of the traditional Majorca windmills, the many olive tree fields and the many undiscovered virgin beaches.

The lagoons and marshes that can be found along the entire coastline of Majorca are filled with rich flora and fauna. Majorca has a surprisingly large number of natural habitats and ecosystems. There are about 1500 different flower and plant species. The forests which consist mainly of Alepo pine trees remain green throughout the year. Most woodlands can be found nearby the sandy beaches. Oak trees are more common in the humid zones in the North. If you enjoy nature walks but you prefer to avoid the mountains, you can find many beautiful paths in the dunes.

In the northwest of Majorca you can take a walk in the Sierra de Tramuntana. This impressive mountain range accommodates the Puig Major. With its 1445 m. it is the island’s highest summit. The Sierra de Tramuntana rises up from the sea with its steep cliffs and is covered with woods. The Sierra de Llevant on the east coast of the island has more sloping walls and there are many caves and deep inlets. South of the Sierra de Llevant there are 17 mini islands forming the archipelago of Cabrera. This Island group forms the one and only national park of the Balearics. The exceptional landscapes and unique animal species on Cabrera are a must see for nature spotters. If you like snorkelling or scuba diving, Cabrera is the place to be. Also the bird life above the island is incredibly diverse and impressive.

Mayonnaise

In the past there have been many speculations about the origins of the name of mayonnaise, one of the most important French culinary inventions ever made. But the question is where it was inveted and by whom. Many people in history have tried to claim the honor, but the mistery still remains unsolved. Some speculate that the sauce was named after Charles of Lorraine, Duc de Mayenne, an area in the Northwest of France. It sounds credible, moreover since it’s in France, but it’s not what I believe...

I’m convinced that Mayonnaise comes from the Island of Menorca. Eventhough the inhabitants of the island haven’t quite figured out themselves how it was invented or who did it, the mere number of different legends is enough evidence to me that mayonnaise was born in Maó, the capital of the second largest Balearic. The most generally accepted story is that it was the French chef of the Duc de Richelieu in 1756 who created it to celebrate the French military victory over the British port of Mao. In French this town is called „Mahón“, so a sauce from Mahon would then be a „sauce Mahónnaise“ which was soon transformed into Mayonnaise. Others say it was a Menorcan peasant woman dressing a salad for another French genereal in Mahón or a Menorcan housekeeper disguising rancid meat from the taste buds of a French officer.

I suppose this case will always remain a secret, but if this story has awoken your interest in getting to know more about it, why don’t you come and visit Menorca, book a Menorca hotel or stay in an accommodation in Mao where you might be the one unraveling the mystery of mayonnaise.

Island Cuisine

Throughout history, the Balearic Islands have been inhabited by people with many different origins and cultural backgrounds. The location in the Mediterranean made the Balearics a perfect haven for Arabic, African, Persian and European folks that settled on or visited the islands. The influences of all these different cultures can be found in today’s Balearic kitchen. The basics come from the Catalan mainland in the Northeast of Spain and fish and seafood are of course one of the most important ingredients. Besides that there are many meat dishes and sausages and products made out of the Mallorcan lard. Mallorca is renowned for the cultivation of oranges, olives and almonds which are also widely used. The restaurants of most hotels on Mallorca offer a wide menu with both international and traditional Island dishes. The quality as well as the variety of the menus in Mallorca and Ibiza hotels are improving every year.

Cooks on Mallorca are experts in preparing soups. On the traditional way soup is being prepared in a ceramic kettle on low fire. One absolutely has to try the „sopes mallorquines“ made out of vegetables and brown bread. In the inlands of Menorca you can try „el Oliaigo“, a refreshing soup made out of oil, water, garlic and tomato. Another typical Menorcan dish is the lobster stew, or the widelier available fish stew, which in combination with bread are an excellent apetizer. To finish of a nice diner on a typical Menorcan way one has to eat the cheese of Maó. It originally came from Italy in the 15th century and today it’s listed as among the best cheeses in Europe.

The Balearic Islands also produce some excellent wines to accompany the Island specialties. And after diner there’s nothing better than to enjoy a nice Menorca gin, the islands heritage from the time of British occupation.

Next weekend, on Sunday the 22nd there is a festival dedicated to food taking place in Sant Joan in Mallorca. The Festa de Butifarra is all about the typical Catalan sausage called Butifarra and made out of raw pork and spices. If you’re interested in joining in this culinary festivity, just book a Mallorca hotel in one of the neighboring towns and come and eat as much as you can.

Tourist Attractions in Mallorca

As the largest of the Balearic archipelago, Mallorca accommodates many interesting attractions. Besides the enchanting natural beauty all over the Island you can visit the capital Palma de Mallorca, some of the many caves on the Island, the water amusement park Aquacity, the pools and aquaria of Marineland or the adventurous peninsula Sierra de Tramuntana.

Stay in a Mallorca Hotel in Palma or just book more than one Mallorca accommodation throughout the Island and go out exploring all the action this wonderfull Island has to offer. In Palma you can visit the impressive cathedral, the Arabic bathing houses and many baroque, gothic and renaissance palaces. Furthermore there are numerous museums, churches, impressive houses and many beautiful squares that are waiting to be admired by you.

La Sierra de Tramontana is a range of hills in the north of Mallorca. These hills are an excellent environment for adventurous walks with some amazing views. The climax comes at the extreme northern point where the rocky cliffs end in the sea. This point is called El Cabo de Formentor and nature lovers shouldn’t miss it.

If you’re traveling with kids then a visit to either the water park Aquacity in S’Arenal in the east of Mallorca or a day in Marineland in Palma will definitely make them happy. Marineland features great performances of dolphins and sea lions. Besides dolphins Marineland also has the largest collection of sharks in the whole of Europe, a parrot circus, crocodiles and a reptile zoo.

There are many nice places to spend a holiday nearby these attractions. If you want to visit Palma, but you don’t want to stay in the city itself, then you can take a hotel in Portals Nous or an accommodation in Palmanova. A villa or a Mallorca apartment in the more rural Calvía is also a great option if you prefer a calmer surrounding.
