Visit Menorca
Menorca is the second largest Balearic Island after Majorca. Despite its size it’s a lesser-known and less popular holiday destination than its smaller co-Balearic Ibiza. This is mainly due to the fact that the inhabitants of Menorca want to limit the effects of rapid tourism development. The locals on Menorca are very proud of the natural beauty and clean environment on their Island, and they want to maintain their land’s beautiful landscapes. Menorca has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993. As much as Majorca and Ibiza are true beach and party destinations, Menorca has much more culture and tradition to offer. Maó, the capital of the island, and the port town of Ciutadella are the two main holiday destinations. Here you will find much tradition and you can experience the authentic Island atmosphere. A truly fascinating aspect of Menorca is the fact that there are many prehistoric ruins and artifacts scattered around the entire Island. It’s a good idea for a day trip to take a tour along the most important ones, like the ones at the Trepucó site near Maó. These are the best-preserved ones.
Menorca is especially popular to visitors from the UK and it has been like this for centuries. Maybe because in the 18th century Menorca belonged to Britain and many British people settled on the Island and have left their traces ever since. The Menorcan landscape is characterized by many plains bordered by low brick walls and here and there is a field where local farmers grow the typical Mediterranean products like lentils, olives and figs, rockroses and junipers.
When visiting Menorca the best places to book a hotel would be Maó and Ciutadella, where you stay in the town and can make outings to the other parts of the Island whenever you want. If you do plan to spend quite some time on the beach, than the resort of Binibeca or one of the beach villages of which the names all start with Cala would be perfect options for finding a good Menorca hotel or Menorca apartment.
