Mallorca Events in October

The summer might be over in most European countries, but in Ibiza and Mallorca the vibrant holiday atmosphere just goes on and on. You can still visit the Islands and book an Ibiza accommodation or a Mallorca holiday rental to enjoy the many traditional events that still take place on the Balearics in October.

On the 12th October it?s a national holiday for the whole country of Spain. On Dia de la Hispanidad the country commemorates the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus in 1492. If you?re on the Islands on this day, then take into account that many banks and other official institutions will be closed that day.

October 21st the Festa de Virgin takes place in the capital of Mallorca, Palma. It?s truly wonderful to be on a holiday in a Palma de Mallorca Hotel in autumn when the climate is milder, but still agreeable and when the city is less crowded with tourists. During the Festa de Virgin you can enjoy many traditional activities throughout the city. Join in with the locals singing their serenades honoring the virgin and try all the delicious traditional cakes.

Finally on the third Sunday in October the place to be is Sant Joan, also in Mallorca. Here the Festa des Butifarra invites the really big eaters among you to taste as much as possible of the tasty sausages after whom this Fiesta was called. The delicacy called Butifarra is a typical Catalan sausage made of raw pork and spices.

Visit Menorca

Menorca is the second largest Balearic Island after Majorca. Despite its size it?s a lesser-known and less popular holiday destination than its smaller co-Balearic Ibiza. This is mainly due to the fact that the inhabitants of Menorca want to limit the effects of rapid tourism development. The locals on Menorca are very proud of the natural beauty and clean environment on their Island, and they want to maintain their land?s beautiful landscapes. Menorca has been declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993. As much as Majorca and Ibiza are true beach and party destinations, Menorca has much more culture and tradition to offer. Maó, the capital of the island, and the port town of Ciutadella are the two main holiday destinations. Here you will find much tradition and you can experience the authentic Island atmosphere. A truly fascinating aspect of Menorca is the fact that there are many prehistoric ruins and artifacts scattered around the entire Island. It?s a good idea for a day trip to take a tour along the most important ones, like the ones at the Trepucó site near Maó. These are the best-preserved ones.

Menorca is especially popular to visitors from the UK and it has been like this for centuries. Maybe because in the 18th century Menorca belonged to Britain and many British people settled on the Island and have left their traces ever since. The Menorcan landscape is characterized by many plains bordered by low brick walls and here and there is a field where local farmers grow the typical Mediterranean products like lentils, olives and figs, rockroses and junipers.

When visiting Menorca the best places to book a hotel would be Maó and Ciutadella, where you stay in the town and can make outings to the other parts of the Island whenever you want. If you do plan to spend quite some time on the beach, than the resort of Binibeca or one of the beach villages of which the names all start with Cala would be perfect options for finding a good Menorca hotel or Menorca apartment.

Sant Antoni de Portmany

Sant Antoni de Portmany is Ibiza?s second largest town with about 15.000 inhabitants and it?s the most important tourist center on the Island. When the Arabs inhabited Ibiza, they called this town Portumany, later the Romans called it Portus Magnus. The Catalans themselves have finally added the name of their Saint Anthony to this town. Besides many interesting sights and attractions in the old center of the town as well as in its surroundings, this town is especially known for its vibrant and international nightlife. Sant Antoni is located in the bay of Sant Antoni and its harbor is the biggest and most important of the Island, it?s an important hub for marine traffic between Ibiza and Denia on the Spanish mainland and the smaller Balearic Island Formentera. The small parochial church from the 14th century is definitely worth a visit. Furthermore you can stroll along the beautiful boulevard El Paseo de Ses Fonts, surrounded by many fountains. At the end of the boulevard is an enormous piece of art called El Huevo de Colón, or the egg of Columbus. The beaches around Sant Antoni de Portmany are some of the most popular of the Balearics. The nicest beaches are Cala d?Hort, Cala Tarida, Cala Llantia, Cala Llosar, Cala Codolar, Cala Roja, Cala Comte, Cala Bassa, Cala Salada and Cala Gració. You can find great hotels to stay either in the center of Sant Antoni, or a hotel in the bay. If you prefer a calmer location, you can choose to book an apartment or hotel in the rural surroundings of Sant Antoni so that you can visit the town whenever you feel like it.
