Ibiza and its Ancient Cultures

hipogeuspuigdesmolins.gif has such a rich historical legacy that on December 4th 1999 Unesco created a category called Ibiza, Biodiversity and Culture in its World Heritage section. Ibiza, one of the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain has multiple cultural and historical sites such as the acropolis of Dalt Vila, the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta and the Cemetery of Puig des Molins. dalt-vila-aeria-2.jpg Ibiza's Upper Town is part of a fortified acropolis which has saved its various cultural influences in its walls and urban setup from the various periods it has been influenced. Its fortifications were built in the 16th century and with renaissance influences.

The site of Sa Caleta was supposedly settled in the 7th century BC by the Phoenicians until the 7th century BC. Some of the things that have been found in the Phoenician settlement of Sa Caleta include large ovens and sandstone mills, bronze fishing hooks, jugs and pictures, and fabric. The Phoenicians left Sa Caleta in 600 BC and then went to the Bay of Eivissa to create the town of Eivissa. The settling of the Phoenicians brought many new things to Ibiza such as metal works with iron, writings, town planning, and pottery made with a wheel.

The Cemetery of Puig des Molins is the best preserved necropolis of the Phoenician-Punic culture with over 3000 Punic tombs. Some of the most important finds at this site include decorated Ostrich eggs and and a bust of the goddess Tanit. During the Punic period, the city was a trading center that exported products from around the Mediterranean.

The Egg of Columbus In Sant Antoni de Portmany

Ibiza is an island with a rich history that has seen many cultures come throughout its history. Along with Ibiza´s structures from times past it also has interesting modern structures like the Egg of Columbus located in Sant Antoni de Portmany.

In the middle of the egg there is a ship that represents the Santa Maria. The legend of the Egg of Columbus is thought to have its origins from a book published in 1565 by Italian traveller Girolamo Benzoni called History of The New World.

According to Girolamo in his book, Columbus was at a social gathering with noble Spaniards and they were conversing about the Indies and one of them remarked to Columbus that a voyage to discover the Indies would have been attempted eventually, possibly by one of the many Spaniards knowledgeable in cosmography and literature had Columbus not discovered them.

breaking the egg of columbusColumbus then asked for an egg and he challenged the others to make the egg stand up without any help. When the egg finally got to Columbus he made the egg stand by crushing one of the ends, showing that once something is done everyone knows how to replicate the results and thus the replication has less of an impact.

After you have settled into your Ibiza apartment or your Ibiza hotel and you have decided to travel through Sant Antoni de Portmany be sure to check out the San Antonio Sunset Strip and have a drink at one of the many bars or nightclubs.
